What are the major problems with applying for work in today's economy?

Permalink Reply by Christina B Bauman on September 2, 2009 at 8:02am: As illustrated by some of Darlene's comments, one of the biggest challenges in today's economy is keeping a positive attitude. The best way I have found is to take every negative and turn it into a positive.

The fact is that on the job experience means that you spent 4 years or more DOING rather than in school compared to graduates. You got your degree in hard knocks and success more closely focused on the business at hand. Remember that much of the schooling that leads to a degree has nothing to do with actual real life work. Use this to discuss your qualifications. This is especially helpful if you have taken courses and done other additional training and education directly related to your work.

I also do not have a degree - just 35+ years of experience. I have found that the hiring managers who came up the line rather than right out of school understand the value and are willing to make accomodations for it. The big bureaucracies will not be able to do this because the education requirements are written in stone into the job descriptions but most other companies can and might.; ▶ Reply to This
